Tyvek Suits

Tyvek Coveralls

Tyvek suits are a type of personal protective coverall that protects against dust, dirt, liquid splashes and sprays. There is a common misconception that all white-disposable suits are Tyvek. Tyvek is a trademark of DuPont. Therefore if you buy a true Tyvek suit it will only be made by Dupont. Tyvek suits are now synonymous to white-protective suits. Be careful though, DuPont manufactures high-quality, durable, safety-tested suits that other companies (or knock-offs) do not have. These suits can be reused or disposed of after each use depending on your environment and exposure to hazards. However, Tyvek suits are under the ‘disposable coverall’ category compared to their cloth coverall counterparts.

Tyvek suits are used in nearly all industries including: Painting, Agriculture, Automotive, Food Processing, Electrical and Utility, Oil and Gas, General Manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Sanitation, and any do-it-yourself projects at home.

They will not offer the same protection as Tyvek.

Best Tyvek Suits

DuPont’s Tyvek 400 series offers the protection for majority of your needs for the best price. The series has two products – Ty125s and Ty122s. Both offer the same functionality and protection. DuPont also designed this series to be as comfortable as possible so you’ll feel great all day. We like the Ty125s when we are at home gardening, painting, or doing repairs. It does not come with a hood which offers more freedom and comfort if you are not using a respirator.

Tyvek protects against particles down to 1 micron while also protecting against asbestos and lead. The material is wear and tear resistant. Most products will easily tear making to exposed to your environment. You can have the piece of mind wearing.

It has elastic bands around your wrist and ankles. Wearing clothes underneath that will be clean after use makes this easy to take on and off.

DuPont’s Tyvek 400 series are made with the same fabric but have different designs. The Ty122s stands out with the respirator-fit hood. When we are at home around harmful chemicals this is our first choice. The suit covers your neck and chin for added protection.

This product is a go-to if your an inspector, factory worker, in manufacturing, or oil and gas but are not around chemical splashes or sprays. Adding in the skid-resistance boots will keep you safe at work or in hazardous environments. The wear and tear resistance DuPont offers is stunning.

The zipper extends from your chin to your groin. You can hop in and out of these easily. DuPont is truly customer focused as you can buy 1 or save money with a pack of 6. You won’t go wrong buying in bulk if you are buying for a season or for work.

DuPont’s TyChem 2000 series offers next-level protection. These aren’t your gardening or painting suits. The QC125B model offers added protection with a polyethylene coating. The coating provides 30 minutes of protective from chemical splashes and sprays – making this a tier above the Tyvek 400 series. The 30 minutes gives you plenty of time for decontamination and proper disposal.

This product is perfect for environments that have light chemical spray or splashes. If you are in the petrochemical industry; food, paper, chemical, or pharmaceautical manufactirng these are the first choice.

The underlying fabric is Tyvek so you will have the comfort you need when wearing these throughout your day.

Although this guide is for Tyvek suits – we want to add our favorite reliable non-DuPont suits since the word ‘Tyvek’ has somewhat become a general term to most people. Kimberly-Clark’s proprietary KleenGuard line offers excellent protection, reliability, comfort and affordability with their A40 model.

The microporous design is breathable and protects against light particulates, dirt, dust, and light non-hazardous liquid sprays and splashes. They pass NFPA 99 anti-static testing and  ASTM F1670 testing for penetration of blood and bodily fluids.

Kimberly-Clark designed an excellent protective suit for petrochemical industry to manufacturing to at-home use.

3M is a household name that touches nearly all aspects of our lives. It’s no surprise that they make excellent disposable protective coveralls. Our favorite is 3M’s 4510 model because of the protection you get from their price. These are designed for when you are working around your house, fixing your car, painting, or landscaping (Compliant with EU regulations and are Type 5 or 6).

The microporous polyethylene fabric is breathable and provides all day comfort. The affordability 3M offers really drives this product home. You won’t break the bank being protected while working.

A few added features we like are the two-way zipper with storm flap, anti-static material to prevent buildup, and does not contain silicone for irritation and discomfort.

➤ WHAT are the different types of tvek suits?

As discussed before, DuPont is the only company that can manufacture Tyvek suits. In this guide, we will alternate between Tyvek and other similar high-quality disposable coveralls. For example, 3M and Kimberly-Clark’s KleenGuard offer similar protection and quality.

Do not buy the cheapest “Tyvek Suits” you see. They may be fraudulent, untested, and will not protect you.

Tyvek suits come in a wide variety of sizes, features, use, and color (although typically white). What you will be doing and types of hazards present will dictate what type of suit you need. Disposable personal protective equipment is designed on a 6 tier scale to protect against nearly all hazards.

There are many types of Tyvek suits that DuPont makes for any environment you are in:

  • Industrial Protection from Asbestos, mold, lead, dirt, and dust
  • Laboratory and Controlled Environment to protect against contamination
  • TyChem to protect against Chemical/HAZMAT
  • Pharmaceutical and Biochemical for contamination and bioburden protection

Majority of buyers are not exposed to industrial, chemical, or laboratory hazards. They are wanting high-quality disposable coveralls for painting, gardening, or any at-home use. That’s another reason why Tyvek is so versatile. It can accomodate any needs for any budget. You don’t need to buy Type 3 coveralls for HAZMAT work if you are looking to paint.

➤ What are disposable coveralls made out of?

Tyvek suits and disposable coveralls are made out of strong, durable material that is rigorously tested. Tyvek is the trademark material DuPont makes and is a high-density polyethylene fiber that is flash spun together. The suit has a smooth and durable surface and provides excellent protection since it is not woven. Tyvek also provides better tear and abrasion resistance than coated-Polypropylene and Polypropylene.

3M and Kimberly-Clark use a range of materials to create their suits. Common fabrics are either polypropylene or coated-polypropylene with different fabrication processes. All three of these companies make great products. Choosing the right fabric depends on what Type of protection you need.

➤ How expensive are tyvek suits?

As discussed before, there are a wide range of uses for disposable suits – HAZMAT clean-up to gardening. There is a wide-range of cost with these as expected. The less protection required the more affordable Tyvek and others are. Cost can range from $10 to over $150.

Never buy cheap protected equipment. There are many fake companies on the internet that advertise ‘Tyvek’, ‘Type 3 protection’ or many other false statements. Wearing these will not provide you any protection.

➤ How comfortable are tyvek suits?

Tyvek suits are built for all day use. Nothing is worse than unbreathable protective equipment that makes you sweat or have no mobility. Tyvek suits offer maximum comfort all day long since the material used is lightweight and breathable. They are also not designed to be worn skin tight. Most people wear clothing underneath so you will need to size up.
